Healdsburg Tribune, 5 March 1927
THE PRESENT CONGRESS passed out of existence at high noon on March 4th. Its present session has certainly been a dismal failure. We think of no outstanding measure that has been given to the people. Several good measures were before them, but the democrats and republicans seemed to be afraid to act lest they would injure their own party and help the other. Party politics run the whole session and the people’s interests are lost sight of.

BOULDER DAM was the biggest and best piece of work they had before them. Senator Hiram Johnson is to be congratulated on his splendid work for that bill, but the big water power corporations, who didn’t want the government to interfere with their private business, put their heads and pockets together and ended the whole thing in a political blowout. Think of a lot of senators, chosen by the people of the states, getting into such a furore that they continue in session 37 hours without eating or drinking, so far as we know, speaking just to kill time! Some walking the floor to keep awake, others lying on couches asleep and one or two men speaking for two or three hours at a stretch. The last speaker wound up with an eulogy on Jeff Davis, president of the Southern Confederacy. The galleries were crowded with hilarious and gaping crowds, which broke out as adjournment was voted with: “John Brown’s Body Lies Mouldering in the Grave.”
——
ONE GOOD THING the imbecile congress did that the masses of the people will appreciate. They steered clear of trying to monkey with the Volstead act. They thought it safer to themselves to let it alone. They voted $21,000,000 to enforce it.
