On the Derivation and Definition
of the Names of the several Counties
of the State of California, &c.
Shasta. — Is the name of the tribe residing at the foot of the height or mountain, remarkable as being considerably higher than the range, and encircling the source of the Sacramento river. — Upon the subdivision of the state into counties, Mr. Walthall, member of the delegation from the district of Sacramento, proposed this name for the county, and it was adopted by the Legislature. The mountain has likewise been so named.
