WASHINGTON —(U.P.)— Richard
M. Nixon. 37-year-old new Repub-
lican senator from California, took
his oath of office today.
He was sworn in by Vice Presi-
dent Alben W. Barkley after be-
ing escorted to the senate rostrum
by Sen. William F. Knowland, R.
Calif.
Nixon, whose part in the Un-
American Activities Committee
probe of the Alger Hiss case high-
lighted his two-term service in the
house, succeeds Sen. Sheridan
Downey, D. Calif.
Downey did not seek re-election
and resigned from the senate a
month before his term expired.
That permitted Gov. Earl Warren
to name Nixon to the seat, giving
him a seniority edge on other new-
ly-elected senators who will not
take their seats until January.
Nixon beat Rep. Helen Gahagan
Douglas. D., Calif., in the Nov. 7
election.
Although only 37, Nixon is not
the “baby” of the senate. Sen.
Russell Long, D., La. —son of the
late “Kingfish”—entered the sen-
ate at 30 and is just 32 now. Nixon
is next youngest.
Nixon was quiet and solemn as
he went to the rostrum with
Knowland. He wore a dark blue
double-breasted suit, a white shirt
and a figured maroon tie.
Several friends from California
sat in the rear of the small, his-
toric chamber to watch the cere-
mony.
Downey was not present.
