right of newspaper readers to be
informed through their constitu-
tional guarantee of freedom of the
press is worthless unless it com-
bines with an economic freedom
for the men who publish the news.
John B. Long, general manager
of the California Newspaper Pub-
lishers Association made that as-
sertion before the 62nd annual
meeting of the California Press As-
sociation.
He said rising costs in the news-
paper business were a challenge to
publishers.
“Who will bear the burden βthe
advertiser or the reader?β
More than 100 publishers also
heard speeches from J. Hart Clin-
ton, publisher of the San Mateo
Times; Edward M.H. Ainsworth, of
the Los Angeles Times; Worthy
Seymour, editor and publisher of
Pacific Printer, and Lowell E.
Jessen, publisher of the Turlock
Journal.
