Ekphrastic Ekphrasis

October 25, 2026 by sergneri

While reading this essay on the book Riverwork by Lisa Robertson in the New York Review, Ange Mlinko used this phrase:

Lucy and her companionable dialogue with Chateaubriand, which builds to an ekphrastic sublime:

ekphrastic – adjective – pertaining to ekphrasis; clear, lucid

The Wikipedia entry for Ekphrasis gives some clear, lucid examples of how it was used over the last few thousand years, as a means to convey in words a work of art or an object that, before printing, could only be seen at one place. The shield of Achilles from the Iliad is one example given.
