BEER.
Its Use Increasing in the United States — Surpassing Excellence
of the Product of the Philadelphia Brewery of this City.
Gradually the consumption of beer increases in this country, and
what formerly was almost an entirely national German beverage, is
becoming the national beverage of the United States, and is rapidly
superseding stronger alcoholic beverages. From the days of ’49,
when the first insignificant structure was erected in this city to
brew the foaming beverage, new buildings of like character have sprung
up from time to time, and the amount of capital employed in the
enterprise has largely increased. Beer, which was under the especial
protection and supervision of King Gambrinus, as stated in the runes
of the German folk-lore, has found, in this country, among all classes,
many strong supporters who look with favor on the benificent beverage,
and remark, with Hamlet, ” This liquid likes me well.”
On this subject Americans and foreigners concur. The brewing interest
has become an important part of our commerce, and the amount of capital
invested in the business is enormous. Immense quantities of barley and
hops are consumed by our breweries in the production of beer. There are
in this city thirty-four breweries which place their products upon
the market. As gleaned from the tax-list at the United States Internal
Revenue office, the names of the different breweries, together
with the amount of barrels of beer sold during the year ending
December 31st, 1881, are as follows:
The Philadelphia Brewery heads the list with the enormous quantity of 59,182 barrels ;
Chicago Brewery, 23,537 ; Hibernia Brewery, 20,526 ; Washington Brewery, 18,068 ;
National Brewery, 16,225 ; Albany Brewery. 16,594; United States Breweiy, 14,713 ,
Empire Brewery, 12,941 ; Jackson Brewery, 12,913 ; San Francisco Stock
Brewery, 12,062 : Lafayette Brewery, 10,519; Humboldt Brewery, 8787;
Willows Brewery, 7656 : Enterprise Brewery, 7117 ; Bavaria Brewery, 7077 ;
Pacific Brewery, 6626 ; Mason Brewery, 6219; Eureka Brewery, 5274;
Union Brewery, 4447 ; Hayes Valley Brewery, 3857 ; Broadway Brewery. 3608 ;
Milwaukee Brewery, 2768 ; South San Francisco Brewery, 2072 ;
Railroad Brewery, 1935 ; Golden City Brewery, 1381 ; Tivoi Brewery, 1240 ;
Pioneer Brewery, 1031 ; Presidio Brewery, 713 , California Brewery,
713 Albion Brewery, 619. North Beach Brewery, 430 , Phoenix Brewery, 178 ;
Europa Brewery, 178 ; Columbia Brewery, 161, Besides these the Fredericksburg
Brewery at San Jose sold 12,593 barrels, and the Boca Brewery at Boca about 15,000.
It will be seen bu the list that the Philadelphia Brewery, owned by John Wieland,
far surpasses all its numerous competitors in the manufacture of beer, the
product being almost equal to the quantity brewed by the next three
largest breweries in this city. Mr. Wieland has always led in the business,
and by the admitted excellence of his beer will always continue to do so. Mr. Wieland’s
trade is not confined to this city alone, but extends to all parts of the state,
and large daily shipments by railroad and steamer attest unmistakably that
the excellence of the Philadelphia beer is widely appreciated by all classes of consumers.

I love beer and am surprised no mention is made of the Steam Brewing Company. I don’t have a bottle handy and don’t recall when they started brewing in San Francisco.
